Lufthansa confirmed it is “willing to look” at Austrian Airlines, but stated it needed to be approached by the Austrian carrier first (Reuters, 21-May-08).

Austria’s Vice Chancellor, Wilhelm Molterer, pledged earlier this week to determine the ownership structure of Austrian Airlines by the end of the year, stating the latter half of 2008 would be the “right time” to conduct the review. Mr Molterer confirmed that one possibility for the airline would be a strategic alliance with another carrier. Meanwhile, Sheikh Mohamed Bin Issa al Jaber stated he would not meet a 21-May-08 deadline to provide a bank guarantee for his previously planned EUR150 million investment in the airline, due to his withdrawal from the carrier's planned capital increase (Reuters, 21-May-08). Talks between Austrian Airlines and al Jaber collapsed earlier this month.
