Britain Airways (BA) CEO, Willie Walsh, forecasts the days of cheap fares are over, stating record high fuel costs and global economic uncertainty are likely to force carriers to raise fares to survive, with many likely to go bankrupt (The Guardian, 23-May-08).
). BA also confirmed it expects it will lose money over the next two years, and will consider further fuel surcharge increases if fuel prices continue to rise.
Britain Airways: “This is about whether airlines can survive. If you look at a lot of the low-cost carriers around Europe, a lot of them have not been able to make money when oil was USD80 per barrel… If these prices are not available it will not encourage people to take short trips,” Willie Walsh, CEP.
