Air Berlin announced (29-May-08) it has embarked on a “stringent price and cost optimisation programme” for the remainder of 2008.

The carrier plans to introduce a “comprehensive package” of cost reductions and capacity adjustments within the next three to four weeks, including terminating unprofitable routes and the potential elimination of most of its long-haul operations. The carrier has also warned that the increased price of fuel has made its full year operating EBIT target “harder to reach”, but still forecasts a profitable full year result.

Air Berlin: “It cannot be ruled out that Air Berlin will close most of its long-haul operations due to high oil prices,'' Joachim Hunold, CEO. Source: AP, 29-May-08.
