(XFN Asia) Air France-KLM's Chairman and Chief Executive, Jean Cyril Spinetta, reportedly stated the company's interest in a takeover of Alitalia SpA is a closed chapter.” Air France-KLM stated it has had no contacts either with the company or Italy's government.

Last week, Italy Prime Minister, Silvio Berlusconi, said Air France-KLM could be a partner for Alitalia. French President, Nicholas Sarkozy, speaking after the two leaders met, said any decision was for the Air France-KLM to take.

In Apr-08, Air France-KLM withdrew its offer to acquire Alitalia after failing to win trade union support.

On being an international partner for Alitalia, Air France-KLM Deputy Chief Executive, Pierre-Henri Gourgeon, said the idea was being put forward in a very different context than previously as all international airlines have to deal with the oil price.

Air France-KLM Finance Director, Philippe Calavia, added "Now the conditions for a rescue would be so drastic that it would be unacceptable. Only the Italians can propose what is necessary to return the company to profitability."
