(XFN Asia) Alitalia SpA stated it sees a pick-up in the next months in ticket reservations after cutting many flights from Milan's Malpensa Airport, rejecting recent reports on weak sales at the airline. In a statement after a board meeting, Alitalia said its adviser, Intesa Sanpaolo SpA has started its examination of the airline's main business areas and various options for their future.

In April, Alitalia passenger numbers fell 25.9% year-on-year to 1.6 million, while the load factor fell 9.7 ppts to 66.3%.

Alitalia stated the main reason for the passenger fall is due to the reduction in seats offered after the network rationalisation and the move from a double hub to a single hub from the Summer 2008 season.

Rome's Fiumicino Airport has become Alitalia's single hub, while hub activities at Malpensa were dropped in the first quarter.

Alitalia said the fall in passengers is proportionally more than the cut in seats offered because of the Malpensa changes and also after the breakdown of merger talks with Air France-KLM.

In Rome, Alitalia's traffic has risen 24.9% in April and by 32.4% in May.

Alitalia added that in the next months, the recent pick-up in reservations should see the fall in traffic coming back in line with the fall in the seats offered.

The government has also appointed Intesa Sanpaolo to advise on the sale of its 49.9% stake in Alitalia in the latest privatisation attempt.
