(XFN ASIA) Deutsche Lufthansa AG.'s cargo unit will raise its fuel surcharge to EUR1.25 per kilogramme from EUR1.20, effective 7-Jul, after oil prices reached fresh highs, a spokesman for the unit said.

The unit earlier this month hiked its surcharge to EUR1.20 euros from EUR1.15 per kilogramme.

Airlines around the world are struggling to keep up their profitability amid surging oil and fuel prices and are trying to offset the added cost by charging customers more for their tickets and by reducing expenses elsewhere.

New York's main oil futures contract overnight stood above $135 per barrel, compared with just under $69 12 months ago.

Lufthansa earlier this month raised its estimate for fuel costs this year to EUR5.7 billion from a previous estimate of EUR5.3 billion.
