Alitalia unions criticise reported job cuts

(XFN-ASIA) - Union representatives have criticised reported plans to cut at least 4,000 people at the troubled airline Alitalia SpA, Italian newspapers reported.

"If this is the case, we won't even sit at the negotiating table," the UIL Trasporti leader Giuseppe Caronia told the daily La Repubblica.

In an interview with the newspaper Il Messaggero, pilot union ANPAC President Fabio Berti said if the figure is correct, the business plan would have no chance of being implemented.
He noted that the government, which owns 49.9 percent of Alitalia, had opposed Air France-KLM's takeover of Alitalia. The French group had planned 2,100 cuts.

A report in la Repubblica quoted a source close to Intesa Sanpaolo SpA, named by the government as an advisor on the sale of the ailing airline, as saying the bank's plan could include laying off more than 4,000 people.
