Finnair June passenger numbers, load factors decline

(XFN-ASIA) - Finnair said passenger numbers and load factors fell in June, citing ongoing sluggish demand for air travel.

The Finnish flag carrier reported a June passenger load factor -- a measure of how well it fills its seats -- on scheduled flights of 70.7%, down 5.1% points from a year ago.
Load factors grew on its North American services, but declined on routes to Europe and Asia.

Overall passenger numbers fell 1.1% to 730,900, with scheduled traffic registering a 2.5% fall.

The airline's total revenue passenger kilometres (RPKs) grew 5.3% to 1.79 billion, including a 4.4% increase in scheduled flights.

Finnair last month said it was axing 500 jobs in an effort to contain the damage to earnings caused by fast-rising fuel costs and a drop in demand for seats on routes in Europe and to China.
