Lufthansa says wage dispute is 'unnecessary and counterproductive'

(XFN-ASIA) - Deutsche Lufthansa AG.'s chief executive Wolfgang Mayrhuber said a current dispute with pilots, grounds crews and cabin crews over wage increases is unnecessary and counterproductive, and possibly even dangerous.

Pilots for Lufthansa's units CityLine and Eurowings just ended a 36-hour strike to push for higher wages, forcing the airline to cancel about 900 flights domestic and European.

Mayrhuber said in an open letter published in an employee newsletter, "I understand that our excellent (financial) result for 2007 and our forecasts for 2008 seem alluring for many as absolute figures. "But in relative terms our earnings are still too weak, as about EUR per passenger are not enough in the long term to finance our growth and give you job security."

The German flagship airline offered CityLine pilots a 5.5% raise in two tranches over 18 months, and has previously offered Eurowings pilots a 6.5% raise over 24 months, plus some one-time payments.

Lufthansa is also facing further disruption during the busy summer travel season from its ground crew and cabin crew workers, who are currently balloting for industrial action, with results expected to be announced.
