Ryanair considers launching EUR1 billion bid for Aer Lingus

Ryanair is reportedly considering launching a EUR1 billion bid for Aer Lingus, after Aer Lingus forecast it expects to report a significant loss in 2009.

Ryanair failed to take over Aer Lingus in 2006 after the European Commission found the proposed group would dominate the Irish market. However, Ryanair believes the worsening economic climate and high fuel costs could force European competition regulators to adopt a more flexible attitude towards mergers. Ryanair currently holds a 29.8% shareholding in Aer Lingus.
