Ryanair welcomes publication by Failte Ireland

Ryanair welcomed the publication by Failte Ireland of its passenger movements statistics for the month of August. These show cross-channel air traffic growing by 4%, but cross-channel ferry traffic collapsing by a record 7.7%, to a new monthly low of 478,000 passengers.

Failte Ireland’s figures confirm that ferry traffic is in continuous decline (having fallen 21% from its 2004 figure), but this rate of decline is now accelerating up as more and more passengers abandon slow (and frequently cancelled) ferries in favour of Ryanair’s much lower fare, more punctual, more reliable services between Ireland and the UK.

Speaking at the release of these numbers, Ryanair’s Stephen McNamara said:

“Failte Ireland’s August figures confirm what has been evident in the marketplace for many years now. Only bullocks go by boat. These “slow boats” can’t compete with Ryanair’s prices, our punctuality or our completions record, which is why Ryanair continues to grow carrying more and more passengers, while the boat traffic continues to collapse carrying more and more “bullocks”.

Ryanair’s current €5 seat sale for travel in October and November will simply accelerate this decline as more and more people abandon the slow boats in favour of Ryanair’s low fares and no fuel surcharge guarantee. It seems that increasingly only bullocks go by boat, while passengers prefer Ryanair”
