In 2009, Lufthansa Technik will significantly increase the number of training positions. 24 young men and women will begin their apprenticeship in Hamburg in summer 2009. The training lasts three and a half years, during which the apprentices get to know a wide a range of materials, machines and tasks, using conventional machine tools and computer-based counterparts.
The trainees have the prospect of a subsequent career at the company, usually in high-level special workshops for engine, landing gear and component maintenance or in repair development engineering.
Training supervisor Artur Boguth, who is responsible for the apprentice tool mechanics at Lufthansa Technical Training explained, “An elementary/secondary school certificate is generally sufficient to meet our academic requirements. The profession involves a great deal of computer technology, as it is necessary to develop extensive control programmes for the machines. This is one of the reasons why more and more women are taking an interest in this type of job.”
