Ryanair called (11-Nov-08) on high fare, high fuel surcharging airlines like SAS to scrap their unjustified fuel surcharge to reflect the recent 50% fall in oil prices. Ryanair made the call on the eve of a SAS fuel surcharge reduction of just EUR3 (from EUR10 to EUR7) on domestic, and EUR5 (from EUR15 to EUR10) on international routes.

Ryanair pointed out that SAS only introduced its fuel surcharge in May-08 when oil reached EUR120 per barrel while oil prices have now fallen to just EUR65 per barrel.

Passengers are voting with their feet and deserting SAS’s high fare, high fuel surcharge flights in favour of Ryanair’s guaranteed lowest fares, no fuel surcharge, flights. SAS’s October traffic figures showed their traffic collapsed by 9% to 3.2 million passengers, while Ryanair’s October figures showed traffic rocketed by 18% to 5.3million passengers, almost double the size of SAS.

Speaking in Stockholm today, Ryanair’s Michael O’Leary said:

“The evidence of these numbers is conclusive. SAS is using these high fuel surcharges as a scam to rip off its passengers. SAS’s falling passenger numbers prove that their unfair fuel surcharges should be scraped today, to reflect the recent 50% fall in oil prices.

The good news for Ryanair is that SAS’s high fares and fuel surcharges, and the demise of Sterling, means that more and more passengers are now choosing Ryanair. Ryanair’s October passenger numbers were up 18%, compared to SAS’s 9% traffic decline. Ryanair continues to grow while SAS is in decline.

To celebrate this success Ryanair is releasing 1 million seats for SEK30 for travel in Dec-08 and Jan-09.
