Flybe welcomes increased air passenger tax

Flybe has responded to the Chancellor’s announcement of increased Air Passenger Duty as follows: Jim French, Flybe’s Chairman and Chief Executive said:

“Flybe welcomes the Chancellor’s decision to link Air Passenger Duty to distance travelled and the introduction of more geographical bands. Mr. Darling’s move to make long-haul aviation pay its fair share is a first indication that the government at last understands that CO2 emissions should be the primary measure of how much tax air passengers should pay”.

Mr. French continued:

“Having said that, at a time when the government’s own statistics show that aviation more than pays its own way and in the middle of the worst economic conditions since World War II, Flybe is disappointed that the Chancellor saw fit to once again increase aviation taxes. Flybe was very disappointed that the Chancellor seems to have ruled out taxing cargo flights – such aircraft movements emit C02 in the same way as other aircraft and should be taxed accordingly.”

He concluded:

“Flybe believes the EU Emissions Trading Scheme is the best way to deal with aviation emissions and calls upon the UK government to commit to withdrawing all aviation tax when the ETS is up and running in 2012”
