Finnair’s and Helsinki-Vantaa’s millionth Asia-traffic transit passenger of this year arrived at Helsinki on 26-Nov-08 on flight AY704 from Dusseldorf. Finnair flies more than 60 flights per week to ten Asian destinations.

Transit traffic has created 4,000 jobs in Finnair alone. In the period 2001-2007, the number of Asia passengers passing through Helsinki-Vantaa has grown from 240,000 to 1.3 million.

Part of the growth of other traffic can also be attributed to Finnair’s Asia strategy, because Asian flights increase feeder traffic: two in three passengers continue on from Helsinki to one of the 40 destinations in Finnair’s European route network. Virkkunen, Finnair’s VP Customer Concepts and Marketing said, “The Asian strategy has generated around 30 per cent of the growth in international passenger numbers at Helsinki-Vantaa.”

A terminal extension, which will open in stages at Helsinki–Vantaa next year, will serve mainly long-haul flights and provide an even better operating environment for transit traffic. Finavia initiated the construction of the extension in Sep-06. The completed terminal extension has a design capacity of 15-16 million passengers per year.

Finnair flies direct from Helsinki to the following Asian destinations: Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Tokyo, Nagoya, Osaka, Delhi, Mumbai, Bangkok and Seoul.
