SchedConnect Lufthansa Systems announced (09-Dec-08) that Lufthansa is now using its SchedConnect codeshare and schedule management solution. The migration project known internally as COSMA has been completed successfully. Lufthansa was the first customer for SchedConnect.
The solution will process up to 1.5 million flight plan changes every month and ensure smooth connecting flights between Lufthansa and its codeshare partners. A number of other airlines have already decided to introduce SchedConnect from Lufthansa Systems as well.
Rotation optimization and slot adjustments cause flight plans to change continually. Even if schedules change by only a matter of minutes, connections may be impossible due to fixed minimum connecting times. Then airlines need to act particularly when codeshare partners are involved. In order to cope with the growing volume of air traffic, Lufthansa replaced its legacy systems in a three-phase migration project which began in fall 2003.
Each day, SchedConnect calculates the optimum codeshare assignments based on the current flight plans of partner airlines. If a minimum connecting time is exceeded due a flight plan change or if a partner flight is canceled, SchedConnect assigns the marketing flight number to another suitable connecting flight. Changes are sent through the reservation systems to travel agents and customers as well as to the operations and passenger-related systems of the airlines involved.
SchedConnect was developed by Lufthansa Systems and Lufthansa to meet the demands of modern airline alliance management. Lufthansa Systems also markets SchedConnect to external airlines. Austrian Airlines, Croatia Airlines and Turkish Airlines have already opted for the innovative solution. The latest customer is EgyptAir, which is implementing the solution in preparation for joining the Star Alliance.
