Air Berlin installs new SafeRoute software

Air Berlin will be using a new software system to optimise approach and landing phases, thereby saving fuel as well as reducing emissions and noise. The new SafeRoute system is based on ADS-B technology (Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast) and helps to adjust the speed of incoming aircraft during their approach phase to maintain the optimum distance between aircraft even at high density airports.

 

Where pilots used to be instructed to enter a holding pattern as a way of queuing up for landing, SafeRoute can now be used to avoid such congestion.

This means not only that passengers will save valuable time, but also that noise pollution affecting local residents living near flight paths can be reduced.

Air Berlin is the first airline in Europe to use SafeRoute. Initially the Boeing fleet will be equipped with this software, and this will later be extended to the Airbus fleet as well.
