Airline pilots throughout German airline Lufhansa and its subsidiaries joined forces (10-Feb-09) to condemn British carrier BMI - Lufthansa's latest aquisition - for reneging on the last year of its three year pay deal with British pilots.
The pilot unions from five countries - Germany, Austria, Belgium, Switzerland and the UK - urged BMI management to think again on the eve of its follow-up talks with the British Ariline Pilots' Association this afternoon.
In an open letter to BMI, presented to the company by Jim McAuslan, General Secretary of BALPA, the five national pilot unions wrote:
“Pilot representatives from Lufthansa, bmi, Swiss, Austrian and Brussels Airlines met today at the offices of Vereinigung Cockpit in Frankfurt. We were appalled to hear of the decision of bmi management to renege, without warning, on an agreed pay deal. We were particularly angry to learn that the deal had been withdrawn at the last minute and after some members had seen the increased pay appear on their bank statements only to see it withdrawn some hours later. We do not believe that this is the way that any airline should deal with its employees. We are particularly concerned that this should happen in a component airline of the extended Lufthansa group.
“In view of this we are sending a copy of this letter to the Lufthansa Chief Executive Officer. We call on bmi management to reverse its decision and to engage bmi representatives in a discussion on how the economic challenges can be met whilst still honouring agreements.”
