Ryanair goes ahead with GBP1 toilet charge

It seems the criticism received from key consumer groups has done little to deter Ryanair’s CEO, Michael O’Leary, from going ahead with the on-board toilet charge of GBP1.

O’Leary legitimised his decision in a statement to Avionews claiming that, "Boeing still hasn't built a toilet door that would require coins to be opened, but I think it is a logical evolution: if you use the toilet in a railway station in London, you pay. I see no reason why passengers on a plane should not pay as well".

According to a quote in the AFP he said that the charge would lead to "less passenger inconvenience" during flights and continued to say: "We will charge for every possible thing we can think to charge for, but it will always be the passengers' choice whether they pay it or don't pay it".

The airline has set up a competition on its website allowing passengers to submit their ideas for the next discretionary charge. The winner will receive a EUR1,000 cash prize for the most innovative idea. Some submissions have included toilet paper fees and oxygen mask charges.
