Ryanair knocked (07-Apr-09) 33% off its 1 million lowest fares which are now just EUR6.70 one way including all taxes and charges (for travel in May and June), as passengers continue to desert high fare Aer Lingus in favour of Ryanair’s lower fares and no fuel surcharge guarantee.
Ryanair finds it remarkable that Aer Lingus just last week (02-Apr-09) were announcing “record sales for Aer Lingus in March”, whereas this morning, just 5 days later, Aer Lingus admit that they carried 7% fewer passengers in March, with a 5% reduction on short-haul and a 21% collapse in Aer Lingus’ long-haul traffic. Ryanair’s Stephen McNamara said: “It is remarkable that just 5 days ago Aer Lingus were announcing “record bookings in March”, yet today they are admitting their traffic fell 7% in March. Perhaps Aer Lingus should explain how “record bookings” leads to 65,000 fewer passengers in the month of March? Perhaps the “record bookings” statement of last week was produced by the same people who in late December were promising that Aer Lingus would make “a profit overall” in 2008 and “increased profits” in 2009, only to announce (just 10 weeks later) enormous losses in 2008 and increased losses in 2009. Passengers continue to desert high fares Aer Lingus and switch to Ryanair’s much lower fares. We believe that by knocking 33% off our lowest fares, reducing 1 million seats to just EUR6.70, this process will continue, as Ryanair continues to grow strongly in a recession by taking traffic off all of Europe’s high fares airlines”.
