Approximately 3,000 kilometers separate Germany from the Russian region forming a border between Europe and Asia. The Russian airline Orenair flies from Düsseldorf to the Ural city, which represents an especially interesting destination for the so-called VFR travel (Visiting Friends and Relatives), two times a week this summer. Numerous inhabitants with German roots are from Orenburg. The initial flight took off last Saturday.
Every Saturday from 16-May-2009 to 19-Sep-2009 Orenair connects Düsseldorf and Orenburg - from 17-July-2009 to 28-Aug-2009 also on Fridays. The flight arrives at 1 p.m. in Düsseldorf and takes off at 1.50 p.m. heading towards the Ural. The flight time to the city close to the border with Kazakhstan is about five hours. Orenair uses an aircraft type Boeing 737-500 on this route.
The Ural River winds through Orenburg dividing the city into a bigger European part and a smaller Asian part. Even though tourism in Orenburg has not yet reached a significant scale, the metropolis to the south of the Ural is certainly worth a visit. One eye-catcher, for instance, is the old, picturesque Ural bridge with its backdrop of buildings from the 18th and 19th century which is open to pedestrians only and leads directly into the main shopping street. Visitors also should not miss the historic St. Nikolai Cathedral built in new Byzantine style with its ostentatiously impressive and typical, magnificent Russian decoration. A unique photo opportunity is the monument at the border between Europe and Asia. And the romantic, deserted idylls of nature in the very sparsely populated, higher mountainous country is only a stone's throw away from Orenburg.
