Birmingham Airport celebrates BSC qualification success
Eighty staff at Birmingham International Airport are celebrating the award of a BSC qualification as part of the Airport’s drive to offer all staff a nationally-recognised qualification in health and safety.

The Airport has registered to deliver the BSC Level 1 Certificate in Health and Safety at Work, Level 2 Certificate in Supervising Staff Safely and the suite of Level 2 risk assessment qualifications.

Certificates were presented at the Airport’s annual awards ceremony which recognises the achievement of accredited qualifications across a range of disciplines.

Paul Kehoe, CEO, Birmingham International Airport said: “Continued improvement in levels of safety requires the ongoing development of a positive safety culture. Part of this development includes an effective training programme. The partnership with the BSC has enabled us to tailor training requirements to individuals’ needs whilst still enabling us to meet our business objectives. As a result of this partnership we provide staff with the knowledge and the skills to encourage and develop a safe working environment.”

The Airport’s Health and Safety Manager, Russel Drakeley, added: “Effective safety training should do more than just transfer information; it should change thinking and behaviour. With the help of the BSC’s suite of qualifications we are seeing a marked improvement in safety performance at the airport.”

The intention is for all new starters to be offered the Level 1 Certificate as part of their induction and those with responsibility for aspects of safety management to achieve one or more of the Level 2 qualifications. The Airport has also introduced the Level 3 Certificate in Occupational Safety and Health with the view to creating specialists in each business area who will support and complement the existing health and safety resource.
