Tags :UK, Ryanair Ryanair today (12th Aug) condemned Unite’s latest airport staff strike in late August †which is timed during the peak summer travel period †to disrupt the travel plans of thousands of passengers and their families. Traffic at BAA’s Airports fell 4% in 2009, and has fallen again by over 6% in the first half of 2010 so these underworked Unite strikers are even less busy now than they were last year. Ryanair believes that instead of striking and causing maximum disruption to passengers and their families, these underworked Unite members should be getting a pay freeze to reflect their reduced productivity at the BAA airports this year. Ryanair will be forced to cancel up to 300 flights per day at Aberdeen, Edinburgh and London Stansted airports disrupting the travel plans of up to 50,000 passengers each day of these unnecessary strikes. Ryanair will contact affected passengers directly and advises all passengers to check the status of their flight on www.ryanair.com . Passengers who have not had flights cancelled should report to airports as normal. Passengers affected by these cancelations should seek compensation directly from UNITE General Secretary Derek Simpson at 35 King Street, Covent Garden, London or at 020 7420 8900. Ryanair’s Daniel de Carvalho said: “There is no justification for any strikes by these selfish and underworked Unite members at a time when traffic at BAA’s airports is falling and they are even less busy than they were last year. Unite must not be allowed to blackmail ordinary passengers or their families by striking during the peak holiday season. If the Unite union closes the BAA airports, then they should be told in no uncertain terms that a pay freeze will immediately follow.” |
