British Airways aware of New Terminal 5 problems before the launch

British Airways (BA) CEO, Willie Walsh, revealed he was aware of potential problems with London Heathrow International Airport’s new Terminal 5 prior to its launch, and stated delays during the construction of the facility resulted in a compromise on both baggage system testing and staff familiarisation with the terminal's workings (Reuters, 08-May-08).

However, Mr Walsh stated delaying the launch of the terminal would have cost BA significantly more than the losses it had incurred to date.

: “The training programme was not sufficient. The environment was a building which was not fully complete - a building different from that entered on day one…The cost to BA would have been significantly greater than the costs incurred by the disruption, by many times…We believed that, while there were known risks, the opening would be successful,” CEO, Willie Walsh.
