Virgin Atlantic calls on EU and US negotiators to “unshackle” the aviation industry

Virgin Atlantic has called on EU and US negotiators to unshackle the aviation industry, ahead of Phase II open skies talks this week that focus on ownership issues (telegraph.co.uk, 11-May-08).

European carriers may acquire 25% of the voting rights in a US airline, while US carriers are limited to 49% of European carriers.

Virgin Atlantic: "The only open skies that make sense are truly open skies - the current system is full of regulation and red tape and we need to unshackle our industry. A car company like Ford can invest into the UK car market, yet airline carriers are restricted from investing in each other. This is a golden opportunity for lawmakers, but we expect it to take some time yet," Paul Charles, Director. Source: telegraph.co.uk, 11-May-08.
