The latest financial results from Scandinavia’s leading airlines does not make for pleasant reading. SAS Group reported a EUR121 million net loss in the three months ended 31-Mar-08, compared to a net loss of EUR5.0 million in the corresponding period last year, as passenger numbers edged up 2.6% and load factors eased 0.2 ppts to 67.8%.

SPAIN : clickair and Germanwings will make selected flights between their respective countries available to each other’s passengers following the ratification of an online marketing agreement. The partnership is aimed at increasing the number of destinations offered on their respective websites.

British Airways confirmed (30-Apr-08) it is exploring opportunities for co-operation with American Airlines and Continental Airlines. Further details will be announced “when appropriate”. Virgin Atlantic President, Sir Richard Branson, stated that the carrier would “fight tooth and nail” to ensure that regulators block any attempt by the three airlines to cooperate (Dallas Morning News, 30-Apr-08).

The UK all-business class carrier, Silverjet, has been thrown a lifeline by an unnamed UAE-based investor, with an immediate USD25 million cash injection. The airline now has enough cash to continue until the end of the year.

UK : Silverjet announced an update on its working capital position and that it has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with a UAE based investor for USD25 million. The MoU, entered into on 29-Apr-08, provides that approximately USD25.0 million will initially be invested directly in Silverjet by means of debt and equity.

GERMANY : Air Berlin launched its long-haul routes to China on 01-May-08, with five flights a week from Düsseldorf to the Chinese cities of Beijing and Shanghai. Air Berlin will offer connecting flights from Germany - including from Berlin, Hamburg, Munich, Nuremberg and Stuttgart, Switzerland from Zurich and Austria from Vienna, to both destinations. Air Berlin will operate the routes with Airbus A330s equipment.

UNITED KINGDOM : (XFN Asia) British Airways (BA) Plc stated it is exploring opportunities for cooperation with American Airlines and Continental Airlines Inc. BA, which added that further details will be announced when appropriate, already stated last October that it was looking to forge a closer relationship with American Airlines as it stepped up moves to lock up more slots at Heathrow Airport ahead of the Open Skies treaty.
