On 03-May-08 and 04-May-08, Estonian Air ticket offices, online booking environment and web page will be cutting over to Amadeus IT platform. Due to that, Estonian Air’s web page will not be available for two days, booking and selling of tickets will face disturbances in all channels, including the Internet, travel agencies, and Estonian Air ticket offices and call centre. Cut over to the new IT platform starts on 02-May-08. The system change does not affect check-in or flight operations. New web page and booking environment will be available on 05-May-08.

easyJet stated it will welcome 450,000 passengers on its flights over the May Bank Holiday period. According to easyJet, the nation’s favourite destinations over the May Bank Holiday weekend are; Alicante, Faro and Malaga whilst Edinburgh is the most popular city break destination, with Amsterdam, Barcelona and Geneva closely following.

easyJet announced plans to introduce another new route from Manchester to Alicante in Spain. The new route will launch on 29-Sep-08, operating four times weekly throughout the Winter, with fares from GBP27.99 one way including tax. easyJet expects to carry close to 60,000 passengers on this new route in the first 12 months of operation.

Ryanair renewed its call for the dismissal of the CAA’s Harry Bush, the Regulator who has announced proposals for increases to passenger charges at London Stansted of between GBP4.00 and GBP7.00, an increase of 150%. Ryanair stated that this more than doubling of already high passenger charges demonstrates just how ineffective regulation is and Ryanair is calling for the immediate breakup of the BAA airport monopoly in order to replace this “inadequate” regulation with competition.

Ryanair renewed its guarantee of ‘no fuel surcharges ever’ as British Airways (BA) announced that it is to increase its unavoidable fuel surcharge by GBP15 to GBP79 per one-way flight. According to Ryanair, BA is buying fuel at USD40 less than current market rates and is 60% hedged at USD79 per barrel until the end of June.

Lufthansa is reportedly considering acquiring Belgian-carrier, Brussels Airlines, and has been in negotiations with the carrier “for some time” (Reuters, 28-Apr-08).

Just as the airports in Berlin are being consolidation following the weekend referendum, airberlin confirmed this week that it remains determined to acquire a 75% shareholding in Condor in Feb-09, and the remaining 25% in 2010.

Ryanair announced the appointment of Ms Sinead Finn as Director of Commercial Revenue. In this role, Sinead will be responsible for the management and development of all ancillary revenue streams in Ryanair with the exception of in-flight catering, and will work with Ryanair’s established partners in the areas of car hire, hotels and travel insurance as well as developing new streams.
