AUSTRIA : Lufthansa Systems has successfully completed the implementation of the GroundSolutions/Mobile check-in solution at Austrian Airlines (AUA). The ability to check-in quickly and easily via mobile phone will improve passenger comfort and reduce passenger handling costs for the airline. The GroundSolutions/Mobile module is an important component of the GroundSolutions platform from Lufthansa Systems, which covers all modern check-in channels.

AUSTRIA : The April traffic figures of the Austrian Airlines Group continue to reflect the global economic crisis. Due to the sharply reduced demand for flights, the company carried a total of 795,500 passengers in April, -12.7% fewer than in comparison with the strong month of Apr-2008.

AUSTRIA : In Feb-09, the Austrian Airlines Group received a highly regarded confirmation from the International Air Transport Association (IATA): Austrian Airlines and also Tyrolean Airways successfully completed the strictly controlled cyclical IOSA - audit. This demonstrated that the carriers of the Group - Austrian Airlines, Tyrolean Airways - were still committed to adhering to the high globally-accepted international safety standards.

AUSTRIA : The Commission has decided (19-Jan-09) to authorise rescue aid for the Austrian flag carrier. The aid will be in the form of a guarantee on a loan facility worth some EUR 200 million to keep the company operating until the Commission can take a position on another issue involving possible State aid linked to its privatisation.

AUSTRIA : Austrian Airlines is expanding its flight schedule from Vienna to Dubai. From 01Mar-09, the airline will be using a Boeing 767 with 235 seats on more than half its flights to the Emirate. Until now, Dubai has been connected to the company’s Vienna hub by medium-haul aircraft.

AUSTRIA : Austrian Airlines is to cease operating its service to the Indian city of Mumbai (Bombay) from 01-Mar-09 onwards. As a result of overcapacity between European airports and the city in southwestern India, the weakening Indian economy and the consequences of the crisis in European financial markets, it is no longer possible to operate this route profitably in the medium term.

AUSTRIA : S7 Airlines has successfully completed the International Air Transport Association (IATA) Operational Safety Audit (IOSA)*, extending the certificate that it obtained in Sep-07 to 2010. The second IOSA audit, conducted by the officially accredited IATA organisation ARGUS/PROS, was completed at S7 Airlines in Oct-08 and consisted of two stages: an initial assessment of the state of safety and the company’s preparedness for the audit and the main audit of the state of operational safety.

However, these include a demand for a subsidy to strengthen the financial base of AUA, which OIAG itself cannot pay due to the lack of a legal basis. For this reason, it has not yet been possible to reach a decision regarding the sale of Austrian Airlines.

AUSTRIA : The fuel surcharge for Austrian Airlines short- and medium haul scheduled flights, which account for the majority of the Austrian Airlines Group traffic, is reduced by EUR 3.00 from EUR 27 to EUR 24. The surcharges for long-haul flights remain unchanged at EUR 98.

AUSTRIA : The Austrian Airlines Group achieved passenger growth of 6.4% in May 2008 in the scheduled segment and a load factor of 75.1%, an increase of 2.3 ppts year-on-year. Due to the numerous national holidays in May this year, some of which fell in June last year, the scheduled segment tended to be driven by tourist rather than business traffic in May 2008. Around 983,400 passengers were carried in May overall (scheduled and charter segments), a 4.1% increase on last year, with the total load factor also rising in May to 75.0%, 2.5 ppts more than in May 2007.

AUSTRIA : Austrian Airlines Group announced it is increasing its fuel surcharge for short- and medium-haul flights from the current level of EUR21 to EUR24. Fuel surcharges on long-haul routes are also increased, from EUR82 to EUR92. This strong traffic result is based first and foremost on continuing strong growth in the short- and medium-haul segment, above all in the Focus East regions, where we succeeded in recording a 7% increase in passenger volume in the first quarter of 2008.

AUSTRIA : Austrian Airlines celebrated its 50th year of operations on 31-Mar-08. To celebrate the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the first Austrian Airlines scheduled flight, the company has launched services using one of its aircraft in a design dating back to the 1950s. The Austrian Airbus A320 now appears in the same design as the first aircraft ever flown by Austrian Airlines, the Vickers Viscount 779 from Vienna to London, from 1958.

AUSTRIA : Austrian Airlines announced it is expanding its services in the Summer Schedule 2008, effective from 30-Mar-08, with the addition of five new routes to the cities of Sochi and Nizhny Novgorod in Russia, Riyadh and Jeddah in Saudi Arabia, and Baia Mare in Romania. The route network expansion will be complemented by frequency increases to 39 existing destinations in the short-, medium- and long-haul routes.
