The number of passengers transported was 7.7 percent lower than in the corresponding month of the previous year, decreasing to 2,507,227 passengers (May 2008: 2,716,646), in part due to a targeted capacity reduction of 3.1 percent. Fleet capacity utilization declined by 3.8 percentage points to 77 percent.

The programme comprises capacity reductions as well as organisational measures. From 03-Nov-08, a weekly Air Berlin flight to the Azores will take off every Monday via Nuremberg. Air Berlin announced that, Stefan Magiera, is the Bangkok-based general manager running the activities of the Air Berlin Group (including LTU and Belair) in Thailand. In this newly created post, Magiera will report directly to Thorsten Scherzer, Divisional Director for Sales Management at Air Berlin. Stefan Magiera possesses extensive experience in the tourist industry. The companies for which he has worked for in the past includ Hapag-Lloyd Business Travel and Düsseldorf Airport, as well as Lufthansa and Lufthansa CityLine. From 2004 to 2006, Magiera was Head of Corporate Sales at Air Berlin and responsible for the corporate accounts sector. His most recent job was as Head of the sales team at Germanwings.

Southwest Florida International Airport is offering passengers easier access to Europe this Summer with the help of Air Berlin. Air Berlin, which recently acquired LTU, resumed its twice-weekly non-stop service to Munich, Germany, from Southwest Florida International Airport in May-08. A third weekly non-stop flight to Düsseldorf will be added to Air Berlin’s schedule on 24-Jun-08. These flights offer passengers more flexibility and the ability to connect to major European travel destinations, including Berlin, Hamburg, Vienna, Zurich and London.

Due to the steep rise in the price of oil, Air Berlin will be increasing the fuel surcharge for new bookings from 16-Jun-08. On German domestic routes and flights between European cities, the surcharge will be increased from EUR22 to EUR25 one way, and from EUR32 to EUR35 on medium-haul tourist routes. On flights to Egypt, Madeira and the Canaries, the surcharge will be increased from EUR40 to EUR45, and from EUR85 to EUR95 on long-haul routes. The last increase in the fuel surcharge was implemented on 16-May-08.

Air Berlin’s services too Russia for the coming Winter season of 2008/2009 have been made available for booking by the carrier from 12-Jun-08. A Saturday flight will be added to the route from Berlin to Moscow when the winter timetable comes into operation. This means that there will be a daily non-stop flight from Berlin-Tegel to Moscow in the winter. From Düsseldorf and Munich there will be a service six times a week (every day except for Saturday or Sunday respectively) to Moscow-Domodedovo airport. Air Berlin also operates daily non-stop flights from Berlin-Tegel to St. Petersburg.

Air Berlin reported May 2008 traffic with a total of 2.7 million passengers transported by the Air Berlin Group, a 4.6% increase year-on-year. Fleet capacity utilisation improved by 3.3 ppts to reach 80.8%. For the first five months of 2008, the accumulated number of passengers travelling on Air Berlin totalled 10,8 million, an increase of 8.3%. For the period from January to May 2008, capacity utilisation improved by 3.8 ppts to reach 76.2%.

Air Berlin announced it will be doubling its direct flights to Copenhagen and Helsinki when its new Winter schedule comes into operation. From Nov-08 onwards, there will be a morning and evening flight to Copenhagen and Helsinki from Berlin on weekdays. At weekends there will be one flight a day. While the capacity from Berlin-Tegel to Copenhagen is being increased, the number of flights available from Düsseldorf to Helsinki will be doubled.

Air Berlin is reducing the number of its flights between Düsseldorf and Shanghai from the end of June. From July onwards there will only be three flights a week, rather than five. The outbound flights will operate on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays, the inbound flights on Wednesdays, Fridays and Mondays.

(XFN Asia) Air Berlin Plc. stated it sold LTU plus, a service centre that was part of its holiday airline LTU, to focus on its core business of operating flights. LTU was sold to MIC GmbH, owned by Juergen Marbach, and to Intro Aviation GmbH, controlled by Rudolf Woehrl. No financial details were disclosed. Both Marbach and Woehrl are former shareholders of LTU, which was taken over by Air Berlin last year. LTU plus will continue to provide services to Air Berlin for at least two years.

Gate Gourmet has agreed to purchase airline catering units in five German cities from Air Berlin and SCK Sky Catering Kitchen. In addition, Air Berlin has agreed to a new long-term catering contract with Gate Gourmet in Germany and the rest of Europe.

Air Berlin launched its long-haul routes to China on 01-May-08, with five flights a week from Düsseldorf to the Chinese cities of Beijing and Shanghai. Air Berlin will offer connecting flights from Germany - including from Berlin, Hamburg, Munich, Nuremberg and Stuttgart, Switzerland from Zurich and Austria from Vienna, to both destinations. Air Berlin will operate the routes with Airbus A330s equipment.

Air Berlin stated it remains determined to acquire a 75% stake in Condor in February next year and the remaining 25% in the following year. The company also denied a report that Air Berlin was intent on provoking the Federal Cartel Office into rejecting the application currently under scrutiny by its lack of co-operation. Air Berlin added that any rejection of the takeover bid will not be taken lying down.

Air Berlin announced it will offer passengers the ability to checkin for their flight or reserve a seat via their mobiles. The MMS check-in facility means that travellers can choose to have their boarding pass sent directly to their mobile. The MMS contains a bar code that is scanned in from the mobile phone at the gate, together with all the important passenger information, such as name and flight number.
