IRELAND : One passenger collapses after missing flight due to security delays

A group of major international businesses today announced a firm commitment to cutting their flights by one-fifth, over the next five years.

IRELAND : Ryanair, the World’s favourite airline, today (21st July) announced a 40% capacity cutback in its Stansted Winter Schedule starting in October ’09. Ryanair operated 40 aircraft from Stansted this summer but will reduce this to 24 aircraft (a 40% reduction) this winter with a 30% reduction in the number of weekly flights and a loss of 2.5m passengers at Stansted between October and March 2010.

AUSTRIA : The traffic figures of the Austrian Airlines Group in the first quarter of the year were marked by the highly challenging conditions produced by the wider global economic crisis. In addition to the fact that demand is traditionally weak in the first quarter of the year in the airline sector, the economic downturn meant that levels of demand for flights were sharply lower.

During March the total number of passengers at LFV Airports amounted to 2.3 million. This is a drop of 10% compared with the same month last year. International passenger numbers was down 11% to 1.3 million and domestic dropped by 8% to 1 million.

DFS Deutsche Flugsicherung has implemented a new airspace structure in the Hersfeld and Gedern area, a region in the north-east of the German State of Hesse. The restructuring project, known as HEFGED, constitutes the first change to the airspace in preparation for the new runway to be constructed at Frankfurt Airport. The goal is to be prepared for the rise in traffic that is expected after the airport expansion.

Orio al Serio Airport recorded a net increase in passenger movements during the first quarter of 2009. The increase, amounting to 0.6 % on a total of 1,452,923, reflects a positive performance in terms of load factor on scheduled flights (with passenger numbers up by 3.4% between January and March), making up for the fall registered since the beginning of the year in the charter sector.

As previously indicated, Mar-2009 saw a further marked deterioration in the operating environment. Despite an almost 3% reduction in capacity, traffic declined by 9.4%, affecting all the networks. This decline was accompanied by a significant deterioration in unit revenues. The load factor was down by 5.5 points to 75.5%. The group carried 5.6 million passengers (-9.8%).
