FRANCE : Following Air France-KLM's announcement on 12-Jan-09 and the approval of the competition authorities, the group has completed (25-Mar-09) its acquisition of a 25% stake in Alitalia through the subscription to a reserved capital increase for an amount of some EUR323 million.

IRELAND : Ryanair questioned (13-Nov-08) the European Commission’s objectivity when it comes to enforcing the state aid rules against failed national airlines after it rubber stamped yet another illegal multi-billion euro bailout of Alitalia, and also passed a rescue package for another bankrupt Italian airline, Alpi Eagles.

IRELAND : Ryanair announced 02-Oct-08) that it had submitted a formal complaint to the EU Commission regarding the latest unlawful bailout of the Italian national carrier, Alitalia. Ryanair’s action comes after the Italian Government announced that it had reached agreement with Alitalia’s unions regarding an offer made by a consortium of Italian investors, CAI. The deal calls for the renaming of Alitalia and writing off between EUR1.2 billion and EUR2 billion worth of its debt in order to secure investors.
