The deterioration in the economic environment noted at the end of the first quarter of 2009 continued during the subsequent three months. As a result, revenues for the Air France-KLM group for the First Quarter of Financial Year 2009-10 (April to June) recorded a decline of 20.5% to 5.19 billion euros.

The UK is experiencing significant cutbacks in airline service, both domestically and internationally, according to the latest statistics from OAG the world’s leading aviation data business and part of UBM Aviation. Frequencies and capacity within the UK for April are down year on year by 13% and 14% respectively, representing a drop of 5,078 flights and 476,000 seats. Airlines have scheduled a total of 33,783 domestic UK flights this month; the last time the April figures for the UK were lower than this was in 2001.

At this year’s Lufthansa Annual General Meeting in Cologne, Lufthansa Chairman and CEO Wolfgang Mayrhuber presented shareholders with the second best result in the company’s history for 2008.

At Deutsche Post AG's Annual General Meeting at the Jahrhunderthalle in Frankfurt around 2,000 shareholders approved the resolutions proposed by the Board of Management and Supervisory Board by large majorities. Shareholders with a majority of 98.78% of the company's share capital present at the AGM resolved, among other issues, to pay a dividend of EUR 60 cents per share. The dividend is tax-free for shareholders living in Germany.

Speaking in front of shareholders in Frankfurt, Chief Executive Officer of Deutsche Post DHL Frank Appel, offered a generally positive overview of 2008 in spite of the difficult market conditions. The Group successfully tackled the critical issues of restructuring its DHL Express business in the United States and preparing the sale of its stake in Postbank, and sharpened the Group's focus on mail and logistics, Appel said at this year's Annual General Meeting.

Deutsche Post DHL, the world's largest logistics provider, saw volume declines increase across all products and divisions in the first quarter compared with the fourth quarter of 2008. However, the rate of decline has stabilized suggesting that overall flows are bottoming out.

Ryanair announced (06-Mar-09) that it would give away 1,000 free seats for every EUR1m of after tax losses announced by Aer Lingus in its full year results on Wednesday 11-Mar. Ryanair believes that Aer Lingus will announce an after tax loss of between EUR100m to EUR150m, which will see Ryanair release between 100,000 to 150,000 free seats for travel during 23 - 27-Mar-09 on its 105 routes to/from Dublin and Shannon airports.

Air France-KLM reported activity in the third quarter reflected the increasing severity of the economic downturn. The passenger business held up, underpinned by the balanced network and efficient hubs, with traffic up 3.4% and capacity by 2.9% (including VLM). The load factor gained 0.3 points to 79.5%.

Based on initial projections, the Lufthansa Group now expects an operating result of around EUR 1.3 billion for the business year 2008. Previously, a result of around EUR 1.1 billion was forecasted. The increase is substantially attributable to a more stable result development in the fourth quarter than was previously expected.

IRELAND :
Ryanair announced (02-Feb-09) a Q3 loss of EUR102 million, (compared to a profit of EUR35 million in last year’s Q3). Average fares fell by 9% to EUR34, while fuel costs rose by 71% to EUR328 million. Revenues rose by 6% to EUR604.5 million, as traffic grew 13% to 14 million, as more consumers switch to Ryanair’s low fares from high fare competitors.

Further economic weakness in January and the outlook for February and March combined with the fall in sterling, are impacting British Airways’ outlook for the year ended 31-Mar-09. Revenue guidance for the year remains unchanged as being up at least 4% year on year with yields benefiting from exchange more than offsetting volume declines. Traffic volumes remain in line with the market.

The Commission has decided (19-Jan-09) to authorise rescue aid for the Austrian flag carrier. The aid will be in the form of a guarantee on a loan facility worth some EUR 200 million to keep the company operating until the Commission can take a position on another issue involving possible State aid linked to its privatisation.
