EUROCONTROL is forecasting that the number of flights in Europe will show a year-on-year decline of 6% in 2009 according to the latest short-term forecast. All market segments are affected by the decline in traffic, as are most European countries.

In Nov-08 there were 7% fewer flights in Europe than during the same month last year. A decline of this magnitude has not been seen since the months immediately following 9/11. Recession, fuel costs and high ticket prices are biting into demand, whilst the credit crunch is both reducing business travel and making financing of operations more challenging.

EUROCONTROL has just finalised a three-year plan to organise European route network and airspace in a more efficient manner so as to save fuel and reduce emissions. The plan, ARN Version 6, will be rolled out between 2008 and 2010 and contains more than 400 airspace improvement packages covering approximately 1600 route changes and more than 60 airspace re-sectorisation projects.

Air France, Air One and Volkswagen, three of the 18 aircraft operators participating in EUROCONTROL’s ADS-B Pioneer Airlines project, have become the world’s first airlines to obtain EASA’s approval to use ADS-B in airspace not covered by radar.
