IRELAND :
Ryanair condemned (12-Mar-09) the EU’s proposal to waive the ‘use it or lose it’ rule in relation to airport slots as high fare airlines continue to reduce capacity at slot controlled airports. The Commission’s proposal would mean that it would no longer be mandatory for these airlines to operate and use their slots in order to retain them and could prevent Ryanair, the only airline increasing its traffic in Europe, from using them.

The Association of European Airlines, which represents the 34 most important network airlines in Europe, has welcomed the decision of the European Commission to suspend airport slot utilisation provisions during the current economic crisis.

The European Commission has agreed (10-Mar-09) to allow inefficient, poorly-run airlines to hoard valuable airport landing slots rather than allowing unused slots to be returned to the many European airlines that are ready, willing and able to operate them.

UNITED KINGDOM :
Virgin Atlantic urged the European Commission to reject the planned virtual merger between BA and American Airlines. In an extensive document submitted to the European Commission competition authorities Virgin Atlantic says that BA and American Airlines, if allowed to combine, would use their market power to raise fares, adjust schedules to keep out competitors and cut off connecting feeder traffic to other carriers at Heathrow.

The European Commission adopted (14-Nov-08) the ninth update of the blacklist of airlines that are banned from flying into the countries of the European Union due to safety concerns. In addition to the previous restrictions, the Commission has imposed a ban on all operations of Siem Reap Airways International from Cambodia.

IRELAND :
Ryanair questioned (13-Nov-08) the European Commission’s objectivity when it comes to enforcing the state aid rules against failed national airlines after it rubber stamped yet another illegal multi-billion euro bailout of Alitalia, and also passed a rescue package for another bankrupt Italian airline, Alpi Eagles.

The European Commission has authorised (12-Nov-08) rescue aid for Alpi eagles SpA, a regional air carrier based in the Veneto region of Italy. The aid consists of a EUR17 million loan guarantee for the next six months so as to allow the airline to recommence flight operations.

The European Commission concluded (12-Nov-08) that the sale of Alitalia’s assets does not constitute State aid provided that the Italian authorities fully comply with the undertakings they have given. The sale is planned in the context of the special administration procedure which will lead to the winding-up of the Italian airline.

Ryanair, called (14-Oct-08) on the European Commission to reduce the regulatory burden and costs on airlines and to embark upon anti-consumer scams such as fuel surcharges and screenscraper mis-selling in order to keep Europe’s air fares low during this recession.

Ryanair called on the European Commission to abandon its damaging plans to include aviation in the European Emission’s Trading Scheme (ETS) and actually do something positive -let inefficient airlines like Alitalia and Olympic Airways go out of business instead of allowing governments to continuously prop them up through billions in illegal State aid.

The European Commission found that a plan submitted by the Greek authorities whereby certain assets of Olympic Airlines and Olympic Airways Services will be privatised in bundled form does not involve any State aid provided that the undertakings given by the Greek authorities are fully complied with.
